Opportunity: Modeling of Energetic Materials
Opportunity Number:
ARL-SRP-00042
Opportunity Location:
APG, MD
Opportunity Description:
In support of experimental and theoretical efforts at ARL, the proposed project will investigate and apply bottom-up, hierarchical multiscale approaches that scale-bridge atomistic, molecular dynamics (MD) and/or microscale, coarse grain (CG) descriptions of energetic materials (EM) to inform mesoscale and macroscale models implemented within continuum codes. The multiscale framework will provide a fundamental understanding of the effects of microstructure on meso-scale phenomena crucial to the shock initiation and chemical reaction of heterogeneous EMs.
The intern’s role in this project will be to develop, implement, test and transition model enhancements to the multiscale modeling framework. The intern will be expected to complete several simulations using HPC computational resources, analyze the data generated, and present their work in oral and written forms.
