Opportunity: Optimized Packaging: Multi-Tier Material Evaluation and Shelf-Life Analysis

Opportunity Number:

DEVCOMSC-016

Opportunity Location:

Natick, MA

Opportunity Description:

In alignment with the Combat Feeding Division’s Functional Objective of Optimized Packaging, this research assignment will provide technical support across multiple combat ration packaging initiatives. The researcher will conduct foundational evaluations, material characterizations, and performance analyses for primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging tiers for operational ration platforms such as the Meal, Ready-to-Eat (MRE) and Unitized Group Ration (UGR). Core responsibilities include conducting standardized mechanical, barrier, integrity, and rough handling evaluations alongside paperboard moisture absorption and edge crush testing to validate packaging performance and survivability across various operational and logistics pipelines.

Opportunity Skill Set:

This project integrates materials evaluation, mechanical testing, environmental aging, and physical food chemistry. The scope aligns closely with candidates in the following academic backgrounds: Packaging Science, Materials Science/Polymer Science, Food Science, Mechanical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering. Candidates should have experience working in a laboratory setting, an eagerness to learn standardized testing methods, and strong attention to detail. Preferred qualifications include exposure to basic physical and mechanical testing tools, routine measurement devices (calipers, balances, etc.), and familiarity with standard laboratory safety practices. Practical competence in Microsoft Excel for recording observations and organizing experimental datasets, coupled with clear written communication skills for summarizing lab results. Prior specialized instrumentation experience is not required, as hands-on training will be provided during the internship
