Defending the Unseen Frontline: Advanced Technologies to Detect, Protect, and Recover from Chem-Bio Hazards

Research Opportunity Location:

Ft. Belvoir, VA

Research Opportunity Description:

In an evolving threat environment, the most dangerous adversaries are often invisible to the naked eye.

Chemical and Biological Defense (CBD) is dedicated to safeguarding personnel, first responders, and public health from toxic industrial chemicals, chemical warfare agents, biological pathogens, and deadly toxins. Overcoming these asymmetric challenges demands end-to-end innovation: developing rapid early-warning detection systems, engineering next-generation personal and collective protective gear, optimizing agile medical response protocols, and formulating rapid decontamination solutions.

This project invites you to stand on the frontlines of threat reduction. You will work alongside leading defense scientists to investigate next-generation strategies that accelerate hazard identification, disrupt toxin mechanisms, enhance physical barrier fabrics, and pioneer eco-friendly decontamination protocols to restore contaminated environments safely and effectively.afeguarding public health and national security from emerging threats posed by chemical agents, biological pathogens, and toxins.”

Emulating the Silicon Brain: Low-Power Neuromorphic Systems for Tactical Edge AI

Research Opportunity Location:

Ft. Belvoir, VA

Research Opportunity Description:

Modern artificial intelligence has achieved unprecedented capability—at the cost of an energy appetite that challenges remote operations.

Conventional deep neural networks demand substantial electrical power, tethering them to high-powered computing infrastructure. In forward, resource-constrained environments, operating systems cannot rely on continuous high-wattage power supplies. To bring autonomous intelligence to compact sensors and distributed nodes, computing systems must adopt the architecture of biological brains: processing streaming data continuously on milliwatts of power.

This project invites you to transcend traditional computing architectures and pioneer the next era of edge intelligence. By developing a neuromorphic processor emulator in Rust, you will build ultra-lean Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) that compute strictly on an event-driven basis. You will compare biologically inspired synaptic learning algorithms with evolutionary search methods, demonstrating that brain-inspired software can classify critical sensor signals accurately while consuming a fraction of conventional power.”

Fortifying the Digital Frontier

Research Opportunity Location:

Idaho Falls, ID

Research Opportunity Description:

In an interconnected world, national resilience depends on safeguarding the critical digital infrastructure that powers advanced systems.

As digital systems become increasingly complex, defending them requires far more than passive monitoring—it demands proactive threat discovery, rigorous vulnerability analysis, and the development of resilient, purpose-built defensive tools. Cyber adversaries continually evolve their tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) to exploit unforeseen flaws in software architectures, firmware, and mission-critical communications.

This project invites you to play a vital role in building a safe and secure digital environment. As an integral member of a hands-on code development and vulnerability research team, you will dive into the mechanics of cyber defense: analyzing novel threat behaviors, dissecting system vulnerabilities, and engineering custom tools that identify flaws before adversaries can exploit them. By participating in this research, you will tackle some of the nation’s most pressing cybersecurity challenges while mastering the tools and paradigms that safeguard our digital backbone.

Persistent Sensing: Autonomous Multi-UAV Architectures and Modular Payload Integration

Research Opportunity Location:

University Park, PA

Research Opportunity Description:

Conducting continuous environmental surveys across hazardous or remote zones requires autonomous robotic architectures that transcend hardware constraints.

Small Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) provide unparalleled agility for standoff environmental reconnaissance and spatial hazard mapping. However, multi-rotor platforms are inherently constrained by electrical power reserves, limiting individual flight endurances. Overcoming these operational ceilings demands intelligent coordination across multi-agent fleets and rapid, modular payload integration that maximizes flight efficiency.

This project invites you to solve fundamental robotics and systems integration challenges. You will model coordinated multi-UAV relay and dispatch strategies—enabling continuous, multi-hour spatial surveying through synchronized patrol cycles, automated return-to-base maneuvers, and rapid turnaround routines—while engineering lightweight, robust mechanical and electrical interfaces that integrate advanced radiation detection instrumentation directly onto robotic airframes.”

Reprogramming the Gut-Brain Axis: Bioengineered Postbiotics for Radiation Resilience

Research Opportunity Location:

Ft. Belvoir, VA

Research Opportunity Description:

When ionizing radiation strikes, hazardous environments don’t just damage physical tissue—they wage silent war on cognitive endurance.
Radiation-induced gut dysbiosis unleashes a cascade of inflammatory signals directly along the gut-brain axis, impairing decision-making, reaction speed, and cognitive clarity at critical moments. Conventional radiation countermeasures rarely address these lingering neurological and systemic challenges.
This project dares you to engineer biological countermeasures that defend both physiological resilience and cognitive performance. You will explore how engineered melanized probiotics (such as tailored E. coli Nissle) work in synergy with bioactive postbiotics—the potent metabolites, peptides, and protective biomolecules they produce—to actively remodel host gene expression, quench oxidative stress, and reinforce internal biological barriers.”

Scalable Shock Physics: Open-Source Computational Fluid Dynamics

Research Opportunity Location:

Ft. Belvoir, VA

Research Opportunity Description:

When milliseconds and pressure waves determine structural survivability, digital simulations cannot afford computational bottlenecks.

Modern defense partnerships rely heavily on modeling and simulation to predict destructive blast dynamics and evaluate mitigation designs. However, disparate modeling tools can produce inconsistent predictions for identical physical events, creating unnecessary gaps in collaborative planning. This project puts you at the steering wheel of high-fidelity open-source shock physics. Leveraging advanced, open-source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solvers engineered specifically for high-energy blast and shock phenomena—you will simulate complex shock scenarios and evaluate predictive fidelity against experimental benchmarks. Your work will help establish a unified, license-free modeling framework that scales seamlessly across high-performance computing environments.”
