Participating Lab: U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC)

The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center helps solve our nation’s toughest challenges in civil and military engineering, geospatial sciences, water resources, and environmental sciences for the Army, Department of War, civilian agencies, and our Nation’s public good. As one of the most diverse engineering and scientific research organizations in the world, ERDC conducts research and development in support of the Soldier, military installations, and the Corps of Engineers’ civil works mission, as well as for other federal agencies, state and municipal authorities, and with U.S. industries through innovative work agreements. ERDC operates more than $2 billion in world class facilities at seven labs located in four states with more than 2,600 employees to administer an annual research program exceeding $2 billion.

Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineer, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Data Science/ Analytics, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences.

ERDC-005

Robotics & Autonomous Navigation in GPS-Denied Environments

Research Opportunity Location:

Alexandria, VA

Research Opportunity Description:

ERDC’s Robotic Geospatial Collection Team is seeking a motivated and talented intern to contribute to cutting-edge research in unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) autonomy. This is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience, with a real UGV, in a rapidly evolving field! We are developing a robust navigation solution capable of mapping complex environments without relying on GPS. You will be a key part of a team exploring the latest robotics technologies, specifically ROS 2 and the Navigation2 (NAV2) framework, to enable the automation of heavy equipment.

Research Opportunity Skill Set:

A strong interest in robotics, autonomous systems, and software development. Familiarity with Python and/or C++. Experience with Linux operating systems is a plus.Exposure to ROS/ROS 2 or other robotics frameworks is beneficial, but not required – we’re excited to help you learn!

ERDC-006

Spectral Agile Synchronization for High-Repetition GmAPD LiDAR” or “Design Optimization of a Broadband Optical Path for Multispectral Single-Photon Imaging

Research Opportunity Location:

Alexandria, VA

Research Opportunity Description:

The objective of this research project is to design, model, and test the critical timing synchronization framework required for a next-generation Agile Multispectral Geiger-mode Avalanche Photodiode (GmAPD) LiDAR system. Traditional LiDAR uses a single wavelength, but advanced spectral systems rapidly sweep through multiple wavelengths (often using supercontinuum lasers paired with Acousto-Optic Tunable Filters or other similar mechanisms)

Research Opportunity Skill Set:

Majors: Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or Optical Engineering. Skillset: Basic understanding of Wave Optics & Physical Optics, Geometrical Optics and Lens Design, Thermodynamics and Radiometry, and single-photon detectors (SPADs/GmAPDSs)
